17 Parts of Eyes and Functions + Illustrative Drawings

17 Parts of Eyes and Functions + Illustrative Drawings

The eye is one of the sensory systems our body has. This organ serves as the sense of sight. We can see things, distinguish darkness, distinguish colors, and so on because it is supported by the role of the eye. As for running this role, the eyes were supported by some vital parts that have their respective functions. What are the parts of the eye and its function? To know the answer, see the following description with the picture!

Parts of the Eyes and Their Functions

There are at least 17 parts of the eye that play an important role in the mechanism of vision. Seventeen parts of the eye and its function, among others, as shown images of the following parts of the eye.

Parts of the Eyes and Their Functions

1. Cornea

The cornea (corneos) is the eye portion located in the outermost layer. This section is a translucent (translucent) transparent film. This corneal nature allows light to enter the light receiving cells inside the eyeball. In addition to protecting the eyes from foreign objects from the outside, the cornea also serves in refraction in the lens of the eye.

2. Iris

Iris is part of the eye that serves to regulate the size of the pupil. It is this part that gives color to the eyes. For example, Asians have eyes in black to brown, Europeans have blue to green eyes, and so on.

3. Pupil

Pupil is part of the eye in the form of a small hole that serves to regulate the amount of light coming into the eyeball. The size of the pupil is regulated by the iris. When the light comes too bright, the pupils will shrink. Meanwhile, when the light comes too dim, pupils will enlarge. The mechanism of action of this pupil to set eyes in order to receive the right amount of light.

4. Retina

The retina is the eye part of a thin layer of cells located at the back of the eyeball. This section serves to capture the shadow that is formed by the lens of the eye and then change it into a neural signal. The retina is a very light-sensitive eye part because it has 2 photoreceptor cells, the rods and cones.

5. Eyepiece

Eye lens is the part of the eye that serves to form an image. The image of the eyepiece is then continued for the retina to be received. The eyepiece can be thinned or thickened according to the distance of the eye with the object it sees. When the object distance is too close, the eyepiece will thin out, while when the distance is too far away, the eyepiece will thicken.

6. Muscle accommodation

The mechanism of thickening and thinning of the eyepiece may result from the lens lens accommodation function. This muscle works to push and pull the lens of the eye so that it can thicken and thin.

7. Yellow spots

Yellow spots are the most sensitive part of the eye to light. When the object shadow falls on this part of the eye, the object will be very visible, while if the shadow of the object falls before or after the yellow spots, the object is not visible (lamur).

8. Blind spots

Blind spot or blind spot is the part of the eye that is not sensitive to light. If the shadow of the object falls right into this section, then the object can not be seen by the eye.

9. Optic nerve

The optic nerve is the part of the eye that serves to pass on the shadow information of objects received by the retina to test the brain. It is through this nerve that we can determine how the shape of an object we see. If the optic nerve is damaged, it means we can not see the blind alias.

10. Aqueous humor

Aqueous humor is a fluid that resembles a transparent slimy plasma with a low protein concentration. Aqueous humor is produced by the cilia of the body and serves as the supporting structure of the lens.

12. Vitreous humor

Vitreous humor or also called the vitreous body is a kind of gel that serves to fill the space between the retina and the lens.

13. Sklera

Sklera is part of the white wall of the eye. This section has an average thickness of about 1 mm, but it can also be thickened to 3 mm because of the irregular muscles.

In addition to the 13 parts of the eye and function above, the outside of the eye is also protected by several organs, including:

14. Eyelashes

Eyelashes serve to keep the eye from the entry of foreign objects of small size such as dust or sand.

15. Eyebrows

Eyebrows retain the water of perspiration or water that falls from the forehead (forehead) so as not to enter the eye. Some people shave their eyebrows, but logically shaving eyebrows is not really good.

16. Eyelids

The eyelids serve to keep the eyeball from the entry of foreign objects from outside the eyes such as dust, scratches, sand, or smoke. In addition, this part of the eye also serves to sweep the eyeball with a liquid and adjust the amount of light coming into the eye. The functions of the eyelid is supported by the mechanism of open and close (blinking)by the calyx muscles.

17. lacrima gland

Lacrima gland or tear gland is the eye that serves to produce tears. Tears are useful to moisturize the eyes, clean the eyes of the dust, and kill the germs that enter the eyes. Well, so glimpse of our exposure of the parts of the eye and its function. By understanding the parts of the eye, hopefully we are more concerned with the health of our eyes. Can see is one of the blessings that God has given. We should be able to keep this blessing! Regards.
