Air Pollution: Definition, Cause, Impact, and How to Overcome that
Air is one of the
elements supporting life on earth. Without air, humans and animals can not breathe,
plants can not do photosynthesis. The importance of the role of air for life
makes us have to keep it so that our air is not polluted. Air pollution can
have an impact on the survival of our ecosystem, therefore, the introduction of
the causes, impacts, and mitigation of air pollution is absolutely necessary
for the future of our future generations to be sustained and sustainable.
Definiiton Air Pollution
As quoted from
Wikipedia, the definition of air pollution is the presence of physical, biological,
or chemical substances in the Earth's air layer in quantities that could
endanger the health of all biotic components of the ecosystem, disturbing
beauty and comfort, and destroying property.
Air Pollution:
Understanding, Causes, Impacts, and How to Overcome them
Air pollution arises
from pollution sources, whether natural or by human activities. Some notions of
physical disturbance such as noise pollution, heat contamination, radiation
contamination and light pollution are considered as part of air pollution. As
for the nature of the air that can spread without space constraints, making the
impact of air pollution can be local, regional, and global.
The Cause of Air Pollution
Naturally, the air in
the Earth's atmosphere is a combination of nitrogen gas (78%), oxygen gas
(21%), argon gas (about 1%), CO2 (0.0035%) and water vapor (about 0.01%). The
composition of these atmospheric gaseous components can be altered by air
pollution. In addition, some of the causes of air pollution can also be explained
by the following list:
Smoke factory chimneys
and motor vehicle exhaust, cigarette smoke, burning, or forest fires, releases
CO2 and CO into the air.
Volcanic smoke results
from volcanic activity spreading dust particles into the air.
Radioactive material
from nuclear experiments or atomic bombs releases radioactive dust particles
into the air.
Coal-burning smoke from
power plants frees nitrogen oxide particles (NO2), and sulfur oxide (SO2).
Chloro Fluoro Carbon
(CFC) from refrigerant engine leaks, refrigerators, and car air conditioners.
Impact of Air Pollution
Air pollution has many
adverse effects. Impact of air pollution such as:
Lowering the air
quality for the breathing of all organisms, especially humans so as to reduce
the health status of the community.
Forest fire smoke
causes irritation and acute respiratory infections (ARI).
Causes poisoning due to
CO2 binding resulting from air pollution.
Causing the leakage of
the ozone layer to make the ecosystem balance so disturbed due to the
greenhouse effect.
Increases the potential
for skin cancer, eye, and cataracts.
Causes acid rain due to
sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide combustion of existing coal to air react with
water vapor to form acid clouds (sulfuric acid, nitric acid).
Prevention and Control
Considering the cause
of air pollution and its impact, we as khalifah on earth must need to take
action of prevention and handling of air pollution which happened so that the
survival of life in this earth can be maintained. Some actions that can be
taken to prevent the impact of air pollution for example
By making a green path
of planting trees in big cities to CO2 as one of the air pollution materials can
be reabsorbed through the cycle of oxygen and photosynthesis.
Reduce the use of
petroleum and fossil fuels in industries, power plants, and households to
reduce the amount of air waste released into the atmosphere.
Utilizing alternative
energy that is environmentally friendly, such as biogas, solar energy, or
geothermal energy.
Conduct stricter surveillance in forest prone areas.
Prohibits people from
burning forests while clearing agricultural land.
Does not conduct
massive nuclear experiments to reduce radioactive contamination.
Well, that's some of
the causes of air pollution, the impact and how to prevent the occurrence of
negative effects of air pollution in a sustainable manner. Hope can be useful.
